The Sorrentino family has cultivated vines on the slopes of Vesuvius since the 19th century and for three generations. The winery is located in the territory of Boscotrecase, one of the municipalities in the province of Naples, in the heart of the D.O.C. Lacryma Christi. Specifically, we are within the Vesuvius National Park, a protected area established in 1995 to preserve the geological, natural and animal peculiarities of the area around the volcano.

Sorrentino has 35 hectares of vineyards on the south-west side of Vesuvius, a part subject to many lava flows over the centuries. This intense activity has contributed to enrich the soil with mineral substances, pumice and lapilli, making these lands very fertile and resistant to the spread of vine diseases, such as phylloxera, which, in the past, in other areas of Italy and Europe has caused very serious damage. Here, there are resistant vine plants that represent a rare case in the world panorama.

Among these plants there are those of the Piedirosso vine, a black berried variety typical of Campania and the basis of the red wines of Vesuvius. The cultivation of its grapes is carried out according to principles of bio agriculture, another distinctive feature of Sorrento wines, in vineyards located about 400 meters above sea level.

In particular, Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Vesevus Sorrentino 2020 is obtained from Piedirossso grapes, for 90%, while for the remaining 10% is made from Aglianico grapes, another red berried grape typical of Campania. The harvest is manual, to select the best bunches. It follows the typical process of vinification in red with aging in steel, to maintain the typical traits of the vines of origin.

The pedological peculiarities of the area and the aromatic characteristics of the Piedirosso grapes are all found in the tasting, in a clear and evident way.

Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Vesevus Sorrentino

Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio D.O.C. Vesevus Sorrentino 2020 is an intense ruby red wine that stands out for its minerality, fruity aroma, pleasantness and versatility.

On the olfactory examination we perceive clean and consistent aromas: there are notes of plum, strawberry and cherry, those typical of Piedirosso, with slight sensations of pepper that remain in the background, making its bouquet slightly more complex. The palate is mineral like the volcanic soils where the grapes are grown. To the mineral vein of the sip we add a moderate tannins, a remarkable finesse, which determines the overall pleasantness of the taste. Also structure and body are moderate (the alcohol content is 12.5% vol.) just to bring out the typical features of the Piedirosso grape and the volcanic production area.

For these characteristics, Vesevus is a versatile wine in matching. We can combine it with a tasty first course with meat sauces, white meat dishes or red meat dishes not too complex. Try it with truffled foods because it can enhance its flavors.
