Salina Rosso Colosi

One of the most typical aspects of Italian viticulture is its great heterogeneity. In every place of our country you can find wines of excellent quality. For this reason, we like to look for producers and wines in many different areas, to find out which "jewels" are produced.

Today we go to Salina, a wonderful island in the Aeolian archipelago (Sicily) and a land very suited to the cultivation of vines. Here the Colosi winery, for many years, has been producing unique wines, typical of the terroir and of the Aeolian tradition, such as Salina Rosso I.G.P. Colosi. We tasted and reviewed the new 2021 vintage.

Colosi is a historic Sicilian winery, in the wine sector for over 40 years. Directed by the oenologist Pietro Colosi, who supervises every step of the production process of his wines, the winery has 10 hectares of vineyards between Capo Faro and Porri, on the island of Salina (Aeolian archipelago). Another 90 hectares of owned vineyards are located between Marsala and Mazara, in the province of Trapani, and Riesi, in the province of Caltanissetta.

Salina is a beautiful island, rich in natural elements, wonderful landscapes and with a very clear sea. The vineyards, located in steep areas, require considerable work from local winemakers. Thanks to their passion, thanks to the practice of heroic viticulture, thanks to the nature of the soil of volcanic origin, rich in organic and mineral substances, thanks to the excellent exposure and the fantastic microclimate, mitigated by sea breezes, Colosi cultivates, with exciting results, the typical vines of the island and of Mediterranean tradition: Malvasia, Inzolia and Catarratto, among the white grape varieties, Corinto Nero, Nerello Cappuccio and Nerello Mascalese, among the black grape varieties.

Salina Rosso I.G.P. Colosi is obtained from Nerello Cappuccio grapes, for 50%, and Nerello Mascalese, always for 50%, grown in the Capo Faro area. The harvest takes place in the second ten days of September. The vinification process is characterized by fermentation and maceration for 4/5 days. Aging begins in barrels for 6 months, and then continues, for another 6 months, in steel tanks at a controlled temperature.

Now let's move on to the tasting.

Salina Rosso Colosi

Salina Rosso Colosi 2021 has an intense ruby red color, with hints tending to garnet, the result of aging in wooden barrels. The bouquet of aromas, that we perceive on the nose, is rich and varied: fruity, floral-herbaceous and spicy. Specifically, there are: notes of flowers and wild herbs typical of the Mediterranean scrub, hints of morello cherry and wild blackberry with slight spicy hints of vanilla and pepper. The taste is vigorous and structured. The alcohol content is important, 14% vol. The body is well balanced by the minerality, like that of the volcanic soils where the grapes are grown.

The ideal combination is with red meat dishes, game, but, in our opinion, the Salina Rosso Colosi is also excellent with pasta dishes filled with elaborate and tasty sauces.

A unique wine, symbol of a beautiful territory, which deserves to be appreciated!
