Pinot Nero Riserva Mazon Hofstätter

The pedoclimatic characteristics of the area where the grapes are grown and the vinification methods adopted by the winery are two key factors for producing quality wines. The Pinot Nero "Riserva Mazon" is obtained from Pinot Nero grapes grown on the Mazon plateau (Alto Adige), considered the top quality of the Italian Pinot Nero. Its producer is J.Hofstätter, one of the most prestigious and modern wineries of Italian enology.

For this reason, we had high expectations when we decided to taste the Pinot Nero "Riserva Mazon" Hofstätter 2019. These expectations have been confirmed: when the soil and climatic conditions are favorable and when the producer takes care and attention of his vineyards and uses modern wine making techniques, the result is the production of a wine of extreme quality.

J.Hofstätter is a prestigious winery in Trentino Alto Adige, based in Termeno sulla Strada del Vino, in the province of Bolzano. Since 1992, Martin Foradori Hofstätter has been its owner, carrying on a centuries-old family tradition. The winery was founded in 1907 by Joseph and Maria Hofstätter.

Martin, with his wife and children, have modernized and expanded the winery properties to achieve the highest quality standards. Today, Hofstätter has vineyards in different areas, in terms of microclimate and type of soil, in the east and in the west of the Adige Valley, in southern Trentino, in the Ronchi Valley and in the Saar, in Moselle, Germany. The goal is to identify specific places for each variety, in which the pedoclimatic conditions are the best to express their potential to the maximum.

Among the vines at the base of Hofstätter wines there are local varieties, such as Lagrein and Gewürztraminer, and international varieties, such as Müller Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Nero .

The latter is grown on the Mazon plateau (also called Mazzon), in Termeno, in the eastern side of the valley: the Italian area most suited for Pinot Nero. At the end of the 19th century, the university professor of Vienna, Ludwig Barth von Barthenau built his home and personal property in this area. He tested the cultivation of Pinot Noir on these lands and discovered the incredible qualitative results. Today the property belongs to the Hofstätter family.

The main features of the plateau, such as to make it the perfect place for Pinot Nero, are: excellent exposure, excellent daily temperature range, constant ventilation, thanks to the Ora winds and the breezes coming from Garda Lake, and calcareous soils.

Pinot Nero Riserva Mazon Hofstätter

The Pinot Nero "Riserva Mazon" Hofstätter 2019 takes advantage of these favorable conditions to establish itself as one of the finest Italian Pinot Nero. After the harvest, the fermentation continues for 10-11 days with maceration. The aging is 1 year in small oak barrels, the refinement is 6 months in large oak barrels and 1 year in the bottle.

At sight it has an intense ruby red color with garnet reflections. On the nose there are fruity aromas: notes of red fruits, typical of the vine, such as cherry, currant and blackberry; with hints of undergrowth and spicy aromas of cinnamon. On the palate it is truly balanced, round and velvety, with an important structure, 14% vol. It is refined, elegant and mineral. The taste harmony makes every sip really pleasant.

In our opinion, it is a very versatile Pinot Nero: for first courses with elaborate and tasty sauces, red meats and game, but also structured white meats, up to long-aged cheeses.
