​Marzemino Letrari

For this reason, when we decided to enrich our winery with a Marzemino wine, we chose the Letrari winery, active for over half a century, in the most suitable areas of Vallagarina, in Trentino Alto-Adige, the ideal habitat of our vine. Its Marzemino, vintage 2018, is the protagonist of our review.

Founded in 1976 by Leonello Letrari, with his wife Maria Vittoria, the Letrari winery, now run by his daughter Lucia, who carries on the family tradition, is one of the leading wineries in Trentino Alto-Adige.

The 16 hectares of vineyards are located in different areas of Vallagarina, between Rovereto, Borghetto all'Adige and Nogaredo, in the province of Trento. We are in an area very suitable for the practice of viticulture and for the cultivation of the vine Marzemino. What makes this area so special? The microclimate, influenced by the proximity of the river Adige and subject to the breezes from the Ora del Garda, which from the homonymous lake, not far away, reaches the neighboring areas, generating a Mediterranean-temperate climate that allows a stable and regular ripening of the grapes.

In this terroir are cultivated local vines, Marzemino, Teroldego and Moscato Rosa above all, and great international vines, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Wine production is divided into two categories. A series of labels are dedicated to Trento D.O.C., of which Leonello Letrari is considered one of the precursors, with the first bottles of sparkling wine dating back to 1961; while the rest of the wines produced are the great classics of the area, such as Marzemino, or "international" wines.

Marzemino Trentino D.O.C. Letrari is made from 100% "Marzemino" black berried grapes, vinified according to the traditional method of production of red wines, with fermentation and maceration on the skins. It follows a long period of aging, strictly in steel, and then in bottle, in order to bring out and enhance the primary aromas typical of the grape.

Let’s taste the 2018 vintage.

Marzemino Trentino D.O.C. Letrari 2018 has an intense ruby red color and shows evident violet reflections. The bouquet of aromas, as in the intentions of the producer, is typical of the grape: we perceive plum fragrances and hints of violet, very fine and elegant. The palate is balanced, savory, with soft and gentle tannins and moderately structured. The sensation in the mouth is extremely delicate and pleasing. It flows quickly. On the finish we perceive a very slight bitter aftertaste that participates in the finesse of the sip.

The producer defines it as a jovial wine, kind and sociable, perfect with many dishes of meat not too elaborate. Excellent with grilled meat dishes or with fresh cheeses.
