Langhe Nebbiolo D.O.C. Bric Cenciurio

Langhe is the name of a hilly system of Southern Piedmont, between the provinces of Cuneo and Asti, with enormous wine value. It is distinguished by the great variety of soils that has no equal in Italy and the world. All this allows to cultivate, in the best possible conditions, a large number of vines, local and not only. For its wine vocation, the Langhe, together with Roero and Monferrato, were recognized, in 2014, UNESCO World Heritage Site.

D.O.C. Langhe is the reference for this territory, wide and varied as the varieties and types of wines it includes. We find, in fact, all the vines that are cultivated in the area. Among these, there are wines made from Nebbiolo grapes.

In today’s review we introduce you to a label, of this D.O.C., that we discovered during a tour through the Langhe and that we liked so much that we wanted to include it in our wine sales website. This is the Langhe Nebbiolo D.O.C. of the Bric Cenciurio winery.

Bric Cenciurio is a winery in the hills of Barolo, in the province of Cuneo. It was founded in the early nineties thanks to Franco Pittatore and Carlo Sacchetto, who decided to create a single winery from the vineyards owned by the two families. Today, Bric Cenciurio is led by Franco’s sister, Fiorella, Franco’s sons, Alessandro and Alberto Pittatore, and Carlo Sacchetto, with the collaboration of the expert enologist Gianfranco Cordero.

The area dedicated to viticulture is about 15 hectares, distributed in 3 iconic and very suitable locations of the Langhe: Barolo, Castellinaldo and Magliano Alfieri. In these areas are cultivated some of the autochthonous varieties, with a particular attention to two symbolic vines of Piedmont and Langhe-Roero, Nebbiolo among the black berried vines (but also Barbera and Dolcetto) and Arneis among the white berried varieties.

Curiously, the name of the company "Bric Cenciurio" refers to the top of the hill of Cenciurio, in the municipality of Castellinaldo, where there are part of the vineyards of the winery. In the Piedmontese language, "bric" or "bricco" are specific terms with which it is indicated the top of a hill where there are favorable conditions for viticulture.

Langhe Nebbiolo D.O.C. Bric Cenciurio is obtained from the best Nebbiolo grapes coming from the best vineyards of the winery and cultivated on clay-marly soils. The grapes are harvested manually in the first ten days of October. In the production of this wine is used fermentation with maceration at a controlled temperature, for about 7-8 days in steel barrels. The aging takes place in wooden barrels for about 18 months and then continues in the bottle.

The vintage we tasted was 2021.

Langhe Nebbiolo D.O.C. Bric Cenciurio 2021 has a ruby red color with orange reflections. The nose reveals a bouquet of aromas typically floral, with notes of rose accompanied by fruity sensations of raspberry and cherry and hints of goudron, licorice and chocolate. It is structured and powerful, with an alcohol content of 14% vol. It has excellent tannins and softness with a pleasant minerality. It is very persistent, with floral sensations that remind us of rose.

A perfect wine with red meats, even grilled, or with mature cheeses. For those who want to dare, you can also drink with chocolate.
