Gewürztraminer "Joseph" Alto Adige D.O.C. Hofstätter

Tenuta J.Hofstätter is one of the most important wineries in Alto Adige. Wine lovers associate its name with two great grape varieties, Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer, which find their highest expression in the wines of the winery.

In particular, the vineyards of Termeno, "home" of the winery, and the southern area of Alto Adige are considered the homeland of Gewürztraminer. "Joseph" by Hofstätter originated in this area. This wine is a world benchmark for Gewürztraminer producers and it is the subject of our review.

For our readers, we tasted the vintage 2022.

As we wrote earlier, Tenuta J.Hofstätter is located in Trentino Alto Adige. Specifically, it is located in Termeno, in the province of Bolzano. The winery has great experience in the cultivation of vines on the fertile banks of the Adige Valley. It was founded in 1907 by Josef Hofstätter, while today the fourth generation of the family, with Martin Foradori Hofstätter, carries on this tradition. Martin, with his wife and children, started a process of modernization of the winery and expansion of the winery property.

Currently, Hofstätter cultivates the main native and autochthonous vines on both the eastern and western slopes of the Adige Valley. It also has vineyards in South Trentino, in the Valle dei Ronchi, and in Germany, on the slopes of the Saar. This differentiation of the cultivation zones allows to cultivate the different varieties in the most suitable terroirs, the best for each specific vine. For this reason, Hofstätter wines are known worldwide for their excellence and quality.

The area dedicated to Gewürztraminer is that of South Adige and that which extends around the town of Termeno or Tramin, from which probably originates the name of the grape, also known as "Traminer". Among the most suitable areas for the cultivation of Gewürztraminer is the Kolbenhof estate, in Sella (Termeno), a cru where the Gewürztraminer Kolbenhof Hofstätter is produced. The wine potential of Termeno was well known since the Middle Ages, but it was thanks to the Jesuit monks of Innsbruck that, from the eighteenth century, this area was definitively established as the homeland of the great wines of Alto Adige, including Gewürztraminer.

Gewürztraminer "Joseph" Alto Adige D.O.C. Hofstätter is one of the top wines of the winery. After harvesting, the Gewürztraminer grapes are immediately crushed and the must remains in contact with the skins for a few hours. This is followed by pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation and a short aging in steel.

Now let’s taste the 2022 vintage.

Gewürztraminer "Joseph" Alto Adige D.O.C. Hofstätter

The Gewürztraminer "Joseph" Alto Adige D.O.C. Hofstätter 2022 is a bright straw yellow with "precious" golden reflections. It is a wine of great typicality that collects all the characteristic features of this unmistakable variety, starting from the strong and well defined floral and spicy aromas ("gewurz" in German means "spicy"). In particular, we perceive hints of rose and notes of smoked spices, cinnamon and licorice, with a very light citrus background. On the palate, it surprises for the balance reached between firm body, density, important structure, with its 14.5% vol., and a general freshness and liveliness. The finish is long and persistent, always floral-spicy.

A wine for prestigious aperitifs and with shellfish dishes. We also recommend it with Asian cuisine, but also as a meditation wine to enjoy all its aromatic strength.
