Gattinara D.O.C.G. Anzivino

In Gattinara vine cultivation and wine production have always been key elements of the local economy. Between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, various written documents reveal the export of significant quantities of wine to the main European Courts. A trend that continued in the following centuries. In this area of Vercelli, with unique pedological traits, the great red grape of Piedmont, Nebbiolo, finds an ideal terroir, different from the usual, to express all its potential. A specific denomination was born here. It was 1967 when the D.O.C. Gattinara was established, which became D.O.C.G. from 1990.

To taste the precious Nebbiolo di Gattinara we chose a small and very modern winery, specialized in the production of the wines of this D.O.C.G. Gattinara D.O.C.G. of Anzivino 2018 was a great choice! Here is our review.

Anzivino is a winery located in Gattinara, in the province of Vercelli. Founded in 1998, in a few years, thanks to passion and competence, thanks to the use of modern practices and technologies for winemaking and thanks to the collaboration of expert oenologists, has managed to establish itself on the national and world scene as a reference point for the production of D.O.C.G. Gattinara wines, and those of the nearby D.O.C. Bramaterra. The grape on which the production is based is Nebbiolo, the most important of this area.

The vineyards are located in three different areas, between the provinces of Vercelli, Biella and Novara: the first is located on the hills of Gattinara, where Nebbiolo is cultivated. The Gattinara D.O.C.G. wines are produced here. In the Sostegno area, in the province of Biella, the grapes of Nebbiolo, Croatina, Bonarda and Vespolina vines are cultivated. The production of D.O.C. Bramaterra wines is concentrated here. A third area is located between Gattinara and Romagnano Sesia, where other wines are produced.

The hills of Gattinara have soils of volcanic origin, rich in minerals. This area, very particular, 300 million years ago was characterized by the presence of several volcanoes, from which the famous Valsesia Supervolcano originated, and which, obviously, defined the local pedological features. To this is added the proximity of Monte Rosa that influences the microclimate of the area, with day/night temperature variation that allows the full development of the organoleptic characteristics of the Nebbiolo grapes.

Gattinara D.O.C.G. di Anzivino is made from Nebbiolo grapes. After careful selection, the grapes are harvested and taken to the cellar for the classic vinification process, with maceration and fermentation at controlled temperature, aging in wood for about 24 months and aging in bottle.

Gattinara D.O.C.G. Anzivino

This is what we perceived during the tasting.

Gattinara D.O.C.G. from Anzivino 2018 is a garnet red color with orange shades, which reveal the long aging to which it has been subjected. The bouquet is mainly floral, with hints of violet. There are also tertiary and spicy notes, with sensations of licorice. The palate is warm and dry, with an excellent structure (13.5% vol.), with soft tannins and a mineral vein, a direct consequence of the mineral character of the soils where Nebbiolo grapes are grown, which soften and lighten the sip, making it even more pleasant.

Excellent with the typical "risotto al Gattinara" or with meat of the same structure. It is also good with aged or blue cheeses.
