Cococciola Tenuta Ulisse

Today’s review concerns a white wine made from a rare autochthonous Abruzzo grape, called Cococciola, cultivated almost exclusively in the area of Chieti, which Tenuta Ulisse has enhanced through its pure vinification, whereas, in the past, it was mainly used in blending with other autochthonous grapes.

Tenuta Ulisse is very linked to Abruzzo and to the historical vineyards of Abruzzo. All this has led the winery to experiment and to invest in the recovery of regional varieties, trying to enhance its wine production. This goal has been widely achieved, so much so that the winery is the protagonist of what has been defined as the Abruzzo Enological Renaissance. Terre di Chieti I.G.T. Cococciola Tenuta Ulisse is one of its greatest exponents. We tasted the vintage 2022.

Tenuta Ulisse is a winery of Abruzzo, founded in 2006, owned by Antonio and Luigi Ulisse, located in the municipality of Crecchio, a medieval village in the province of Chieti. The area is hilly, with mainly clay soils, very bright and well ventilated, thanks to the light sea breezes coming from the east, directly from the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the most suitable areas of the entire Region, where local vines can express themselves to the maximum of their potential.

The aim of the winery, since its foundation, has been to enhance the ampelographic heritage of Abruzzo, rediscovering those vines that, in the past, were less known than the famous Montepulciano, Trebbiano Abruzzese and Pecorino. The recent success of the Cococciola and Passerina vines, autochthonous and historical of this territory, was favored by the work and the passion of the Tenuta Ulisse.

The winery has a modern cellar equipped with innovative winemaking tools, which contribute to ensuring the high quality of its wines. For example, Tenuta Ulisse has the "cooling tunnel" to bring the grapes to a lower temperature, than those at which they were harvested, such as to favor the extraction and the concentration of the aromatic components of the grape. The exaltation of the primary aromas of its varieties is a common feature of Tenuta Ulisse wines, including Terre di Chieti I.G.T. Cococciola!

The Cococciola Tenuta Ulisse is made from 100% Cococciola grapes, harvested between September and October, and then placed in the "cooling tunnel". The fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature (about 11 ºC). In order to bring out the original aromas of the vine, the aging takes place in steel tanks and then in the bottle.

We are ready to taste the 2022 vintage.

Cococciola Tenuta Ulisse

Cococciola Terre di Chieti I.G.T. Tenuta Ulisse 2022 has a straw yellow color. We really like its clear and evident aromas, very well defined and characteristic of the grape. We perceive notes of white flowers and citrus hints of grapefruit and lemon. The aromatic typicality sought by the producer is very clear. The floral and citrus sensations are very persistent and accompany us throughout the tasting. In addition, they contribute to the great freshness that is strengthened on the palate, thanks to its marked sapidity and its pleasant acidulous vein. The structure of the wine is important, 13% vol., and contributes to enhance his personality.

In our opinion, this wine is perfect with fresh cheeses and with any fish dish. It is excellent with appetizers and raw fish.
