A few days ago, we had the opportunity to taste Elena Walch’s Chardonnay, produced from grapes grown in this vineyard. This is the Alto Adige Chardonnay Riserva D.O.C. "Vigna Castel Ringberg" Elena Walch. Each vintage of this Chardonnay has obtained very high scores and excellent ratings from the main international wine guides. Specifically, the 2018 vintage was awarded with:

- 94 points Robert Parker;
- 93 points Decanter;
- 91 points Falstaff.

Elena Walch is a leading winery of Alto Adige, family run, very well known and appreciated by Italian wine lovers. With a centuries-old tradition, the winery, thanks to the work of Elena Walch, has earned a huge local, national and international success. Today, the winery is also led by the daughters of Elena, Julia and Karoline Walch, the fifth generation of the family.

Among the 60 hectares owned by the winery, there are those of the "Vigna Kastelaz", in Termeno sulla Strada del Vino (in the province of Bolzano), the perfect place for the Gewürztraminer, and those of the Vigna Castel Ringberg, in Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino (also in the province of Bolzano), where Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Lagrein are cultivated.

The Castel Ringberg vineyard is built around a wonderful Renaissance castle of 1620, built by the Habsburgs, near Caldaro Lake. The vineyard is located between 300 and 400 m. above sea level, with land that, in the western area, are steep and characterized by the massive presence of dolomitic rock, while in the central and southern by limestone. The microclimate is ideal for the qualitative cultivation of the vine, especially for those international varieties of which we have written and the Lagrein. The contribution of the breezes from the Caldaro Lake is fundamental, making the climate mild and ensuring constant ventilation. These particular conditions, with the pedo-geological characteristics of the area, allow to give life to elegant and mineral wines.

The Chardonnay Riserva Vigna "Castel Ringberg" Elena Walch is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes, grown in the Castel Ringberg vineyard. After harvesting, the grapes are pressed, with static decanting of the must. Fermentation takes place in Allier French wood barriques, followed by sur lies aging and weekly batonnage. Aging takes place for 10 months in barriques and for another 6 months in steel containers.

The Alto Adige Chardonnay Riserva D.O.C. "Vigna Castel Ringberg" Elena Walch 2018 is golden yellow, with dark reflections that reveal the long aging. The bouquet is very varied and complex: we perceive notes of exotic fruit, notes of almond and honey, hints of vanilla and tertiary sensations, toasted and spicy, generated in the period spent in barrique. The palate reveals excellent freshness and elegant structure. It has a mineral vein, which recalls that of the land where its grapes are grown, combined with softness, enhanced by the aging sur lies, and a long and persistent finish.

It is a white wine perfect with white meat and smoked dishes. Exceptional with smoked salmon. For richness and complexity it can be drunk alone, like a meditation wine!
