Initially, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo was a specific type of wine of the D.O.P. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Subsequently, given its success, its enormous value and its particularity, it was recognized as an autonomous D.O.P., starting from the 2010 harvest.

Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is a D.O.P. reserved for two types of rosé wine: the basic version and the Superior version. This second type is characterized by a lower yield of grapes per hectare than the basic version and by a higher minimum alcohol content than the basic version. In the specific case of Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, for the Superior version there is also the possibility of maturation in wood and it is mandatory to be released for consumption from 1 March of the year following the harvest, while the basic version can be released for consumption starting from January 1st of the year following the harvest.

Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is obtained from the red grapes of the Montepulciano vine. In particular, the Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo wine, in both versions, must be obtained from at least 85% Montepulciano grapes. For the remaining 15%, grapes from other non-aromatic red grape varieties from Abruzzo can be used.
