Karana Cantina Gallura

Traditionally associated with Piedmont, where much of its production is concentrated, giving rise to iconic wines and appellations of Italian oenology, Nebbiolo is also successfully cultivated in other areas of Italy, some of which are unsuspected or little known. Yes, because few people know that this variety finds ideal conditions to express itself at very high quality levels even in a specific historical-geographical region of Sardinia. We are talking about Alta Gallura, an area with a centuries-old winemaking tradition.

The Nebbiolo that we present to you today, the subject of our review, comes precisely from this land. It is a surprising wine, which has nothing to envy of its Piedmontese colleagues. It is called Karana, 2022 vintage, and it is produced by Cantina Gallura. Continue reading to find out more.

The Cantina Gallura has been the reference winery of Alta Gallura since 1956. Specifically, it is based in Tempio Pausania, in the province of Sassari, near Monte Limbara, in north-western Sardinia. The cooperative was founded with the aim of carrying on the renowned winemaking tradition of this area, enhancing its typical products.

We are in the home of Vermentino, the Gallura vine par excellence, at the basis of the D.O.C.G. Vermentino di Gallura, the first and only D.O.C.G. of Sardinia and one of the rare denominations reserved exclusively for white wines. It is no coincidence that much of the wine production of the Gallura winery is concentrated on this appellation, produced in various versions of the highest quality, among which the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG Superiore Canayli stands out (can be purchased on our wine sales site). Among the other autochthonous varieties cultivated by the winery there are Cannonau, Moscato, Pascale and the Caricagiola vine.

And what about Nebbiolo? The Gallura winery has also stood out for the adoption and qualitative cultivation of Nebbiolo, which, despite what one might believe, has a great tradition in the Gallura area. According to some, the vine was introduced to Gallura in the eighteenth century, according to others it was the general and politician Alfonso La Marmora, a century later, who brought this variety to the island, finding its first home in the municipality of Luras. Certainly, the Gallura winemakers realized that the soil and climate conditions of their territory guaranteed perfect development and ripening of their grapes. In particular, Gallura stands out for its rocky-granite soil, for the excellent and constant exposure of its vineyards, for its proximity to Mount Limbara and the sea, which generate a rather mild microclimate. And so it was that Nebbiolo entered the local wine scene.

Karana Cantina Gallura

For this reason, alongside the autochthonous varieties, Cantina Gallura cultivates the typical Gallura Nebbiolo, vinified in different versions. Among these there is also Karana, a red wine that has managed to establish itself on the national and international market. This wine is mainly obtained from Nebbiolo grapes, approximately 90%, while the remaining 10% is made from grapes of the Sangiovese and Caricagiola varieties. The production process follows the classic phases of red winemaking, with maceration for 5-6 days and maturation/refinement for a total of approximately 8 months.

Let's taste the 2022 vintage.

The Karana Colli del Limbara IGT Cantina Gallura 2022 presents itself in a bright ruby color. On the nose it is intense, clean and with a clear and well-defined bouquet of aromas: red fruit, in particular blackberries and cherries, enriched by vinous hints. On the palate it is full, decidedly structured, with an excellent alcohol content (14% vol.), absolutely balanced, with a nice mix of soft notes, a well-smoothed tannic texture and a fresh and pleasant acidulous note. The finish is decidedly persistent. We feel the same fruity sensations that we perceived on the palate.

A perfect wine with first courses with stuffed pasta or with tasty and important sauces and condiments. Excellent with red meat second courses and medium or long-aged cheeses. It is fantastic with the typical Pecorino Sardo DOP Dolce.

Did you know the Karana by Cantina Gallura? Have you ever tasted it? What do you think?
