Do you have any doubts? You don't know everything about this wine? Would you like to know what it is?

Well, continue reading our article. We will explain it to you.

Franciacorta Satèn: history and meaning

Franciacorta Satèn was born in the 1990s. In 1989, a European law specified that the term 'crémant' could only be used for certain sparkling wines from France and Luxembourg, the original lands of these wines.

What are 'Crémant' wines? They are sparkling wines characterised by less effervescence, by less pressure in the bottle than the classic ones and, consequently, by a 'creamier' consistency.

Typical of France, these wines were also produced in Italy, particularly in Franciacorta. The European law of 1989 forced Italian producers to look for a new name for their products, which were previously called Franciacorta Crémant.

With the help of a group of marketing experts, they chose the name 'Satèn' because it is the French pronunciation of 'satin'. "Satin" is a soft and silky fabric. This word was considered perfect to emphasise the characteristics of these wines, so soft and 'silky' on the palate.

The name Franciacorta Satèn was registered in 1998. In 2008, Franciacorta Satèn officially became a new type of wine in the Franciacorta DOCG.

Franciacorta Satèn: characteristics

Franciacorta Satèn is one of the five types of wine of DOCG Franciacorta:

- "Franciacorta"

- "Franciacorta" Satèn

- "Franciacorta" Rosé;

- "Franciacorta" Millesimato;

- "Franciacorta" Riserva.

We will now explain the characteristics of Franciacorta Satèn.

Franciacorta Satèn is a particular type of Franciacorta DOCG wine. Compared to the other types, it is only made from white grapes and it has a lower pressure in the bottle.

All other types of Franciacorta can be produced with Chardonnay and/or Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc grapes. The “Satèn” cannot be made from Pinot Noir grapes, but only from Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc grapes.

Satèn is the only Franciacorta that has a pressure of less than 5 atmospheres. And it is precisely this characteristic that determines its typical softness and tasting delicacy. In the other types, the pressure in the bottle is always higher. It is 6-6.5 atmospheres.

Finally, Franciacorta Satèn can only be produced in the Brut version, with a final sugar content of 12 g/l or less. The other types of Franciacorta can be produced in all the different variants: extra brut, brut, extra dry, sec and demi-sec.

Now you know what Franciacorta Satèn is.
