The name, from the Latin "plenium" suggests characteristics of fullness, complexity and great structure, and this is indeed a wine that is valued for its long-lasting and richly fragrant aroma. The "riserva" category dictates a minimum ageing period of 24 months, six of which in the bottles. Plenio is produced with a must that cannot be obtained from the crushing of the grapes at the Villa Bianchi vineyard, situated at Moie di Maiolati, in the heart of the Verdicchio Classico production area. Great care and attention is taken with the grapes during the harvest, transportation in trays and crushing to avoid unwanted maceration and fermentation. 30% of the must is fermented in new Allier and Troncais French oak barrels, and in March it is combined with the remainder, which is fermented in steel containers under controlled temperatures. After being subjected to malolactic fermentation, the wine rests in cement tanks for twelve months, in permanent contact with the dregs, and is then refined in bottles for a year. The wine is a heavily-laden straw-yellow colour with a golden reflection. It has a full, fresh, long-lasting bouquet that is reminiscent of vanilla and ripe fruit. It tastes dry, velvety, rich and well-balanced, with a characteristic bitterish aftertaste. Contains sulphites. Produced by Azienda Vinicola Umani Ronchi Spa - Via Adriatica 12 - 60027, Osimo (AN) - Italy.
The producer
Since the beginning of its history, Umani Ronchi has distinguished itself as a great interpreter of two of the most typical wines of the Marche region, Verdicchio and Rosso Conero. Massimo Bernetti, who since the 1990s has been joined in the management of the company by his son Michele, has created wines which are appreciated throughout the world, has renovated the vineyard stock and has refurbished the great winery at Osimo, but he is not yet satisfied and stubbornly insists on following the imperatives of a product of the highest quality. All this translates into serious work of experimental agronomy and vineyard care, and the adoption of the most advanced techniques of cultivation and vinification. In the last few years the growth of interest in the wines produced in the neighbouring region of Abruzzo led Umani Ronchi in 2002 to purchase a 30 hectare holding in the Teramane hills, a designated sub-area of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo appellation.
