This wine comes from a sub-area of Valtellina Superiore called Grumello that takes its name from the homonymous castle that dates back to the eleventh century. It comes from the Nebbiolo grapevine, which is known locally as Chiavennasca, and, to a much lesser extent from other local grapevines (Pignola, Rossola and Brugnola). It is a red wine with lots of personality, with good well-bodied characteristics and a structure that means it is at its best to drink from the third year after it has been produced. It is a ruby colour with a grainy tendency. The aroma is subtle and long-lasting with a hint of hazelnuts. It tastes velvety and well-balanced.

The producer

Valtellina is a noble wine-making area with ancient traditions. Traditions that are not ignored by the wine-makers at Rainoldi. Considerable experience and a well-developed knowledge of wine-making techniques allow Rainoldi to fully realise the potential of the Valtellinesi grapes and obtain superior wines with delicate and refined characteristics.

Best with

This wine is the ideal accompaniment for red meat, game and more substantial first courses. It is also good with medium-mature cheese.

How to serve it

The wine should be served at 18 - 20 degrees centigrade. The best glasses to use are clear, transparent crystal goblets.

How to keep

If it is kept well, this wine has an average conservation period of eight to nine years. The bottles should be laid horizontally in a cool, dark, humid wine-cellar.
