"Jorio" is a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo "cru" and represents the result of a project that Umani Ronchi are bringing to fruition in the region of Abruzzo. The decision to produce this "cru" was based on the basis of decades of experience acquired producing Montepulciano d' Abruzzo and forty years' experience cultivating Montepulciano in the Monte Conero area. "Jorio" is an example of the maximum potential of the Montepulciano species of grapevine. The vineyard is situated on one of the highest hills (650 meters) in the municipality of Guardiagrele (Chieti). It is typified by a low yield per hectare, which is a result of a drastic reduction in the amount of fertiliser used, severs pruning and the greasiness of the land. After maceration with the grapeskins for twelve days, the must is transferred into stainless steel containers, where lactic fermentation takes place. The wine is then aged in large oak barrels for eleven months. It is a brilliant ruby colour and has a typical aroma of ripe plumbs and liquorice and a mellow, rich, fragrant and well-structured taste. Contains sulphites. Produced by Azienda Vinicola Umani Ronchi Spa - Via Adriatica 12 - 60027, Osimo (AN) - Italy.

The producer

Since the beginning of its history, Umani Ronchi has distinguished itself as a great interpreter of two of the most typical wines of the Marche region, Verdicchio and Rosso Conero. Massimo Bernetti, who since the 1990s has been joined in the management of the company by his son Michele, has created wines which are appreciated throughout the world, has renovated the vineyard stock and has refurbished the great winery at Osimo, but he is not yet satisfied and stubbornly insists on following the imperatives of a product of the highest quality. All this translates into serious work of experimental agronomy and vineyard care, and the adoption of the most advanced techniques of cultivation and vinification. In the last few years the growth of interest in the wines produced in the neighbouring region of Abruzzo led Umani Ronchi in 2002 to purchase a 30 hectare holding in the Teramane hills, a designated sub-area of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo appellation.

A refined, highly drinkable and truly modern Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. I visited the Umani Ronchi winery on my travels in Italy and I must say that it knows how to best interpret the Abruzzo terroir and the tastes of enthusiasts. (Posted on 4/9/2024)
